Sunday School Curriculum Outline |
Revised October 2003
Preschool-
For preschool curriculum, we use
"Teaching your children joy" by Linda and Richard Eyre as a foundation.
Teachers use the story and activities in the chapters, one a week, to
create lessons for September through November. After that, we use
Bible stories from "First Favorite-Bible Lessons for Preschoolers" by
Beth Rowland Wolf and Bonnie Temple (Group
Publishing.)
Kindergarten, 1st
& 2nd Grades- We are focusing on a foundation in
Bible stories for these grades using such curriculum as "Explore Bible
People" (A 52 weeks Bible Journey for ages 4-6), "Follow the Bible" (same)
(both from Standard Publishing), stories from "The Children's Illustrated
Bible" which gives a lot of historical background as well (DK Publishing)
and other Christian curriculum. We use movies of Bible stories that are
20-30 minutes long occasionally (from Family Entertainment Network and
Hanna and Barbera.) Of course, teachers bring in DP perspectives and use
the Hoon Dok Study Books for Children for church holidays. We decided to
focus on the Bible in the younger years since we really want our children
to have a foundation in the Bible stories, not just the traditional ones
told in connection with DP (parallels of history, etc.) Our church
community has Friday night DP classes and we do not want the students to
have DP year after year without having the framework within which to
understand it. Some of our eldes 2nd generation feel that they know
everything about DP because they have heard so many lessons and lectures
yet they haven't really understood how to internalize them. For these
reasons, we adapted the national curriculum for preschool-2nd
grades.
3rd
Grade- Third grade uses the book "Light of Glory" and we
have developed some activities/worksheets for each lesson. We have
included a bit of Korean culture, Korean words, Korean folktales,
etc.
4th
Grade- During the year, we go through Principle from "Who
is God?", "Creation", Spiritual Growth", "The Fall", "Life of Jesus",
"Restoration" (including a section on central women-Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel
& Leah, Queen Esther, Ruth and Naomi, Elizabeth & Mary, True
Mother and Dae Mo Nim.) We are working on this and hope to have something
available soon. We include movies such as "The Prince of Egypt" and
"Joseph, King of Dreams," each split over two Sundays.
5th
grade- The students focus more on the life of Jesus. We
use as resources "Principle Study Book" by the Sabos, "The life and
mission of Jesus Christ" (taken from Father's words,) "Grow through the
Bible" (Standard Publishing), and "The Big Book of Bible Skits" (Gospel
Light). We have adapted the national curriculum somewhat but start with
Christology, the Purpose of the Messiah, the life of Jesus and John the
Baptist, Jesus'teachings through parables, Jesus'death, the early
disciples, the grouth of Christianity, Paul's conversion and ministry, the
2nd coming and what are blessed families. At the end of the year, we
review some of the Old Testament stories.
6th
Grade- Using the "True Family Values" book and lectures
developed by Rev. Kevin Thompson, the 6th graders explore the Family
Pledge and their own faith. The balance of the year we use stories of
lives of the Saints taken from "the Giant at the Ford and Other Legends of
the Saints" by Ursula Synge, Father's life using Michael Breen's book "Sun
Myung Moon - the early years - 1920-53" as a resource and stories printed
from "True Parents' history for Children" that include the development of
the church in Korea, missionaries to the west, and the growth of the
church in
America.
