Lesson on Worship

Before you give that lesson please see the page on "The Art of Asking questions". Remember; " Questions only cost the time and effort to think of them and to plan for using them". Interaction with Analytical and Personlized questions, inviting them to think, imagine and interpret will be better than just Fact questions for discussion.

On flannelboard or white board on 3 inches squares of construction paper write one letter of the word "worship."

 W / O / R / S / H / I / P

Make seven other construction paper cards 8" x 3".

Write "Wait," "Only God," "Honor," "Instructs," and "Pray"  on cards.  Draw an open book  and a musical note  on two other cards.

Spread rubber cement glue on the backs of these cards and let it dry or put velcro piece, small one will do.  They will then adhere to your flannelboard. An other alternative will be to use a felt material for the board and cut the word in flannel material, it will stick to the board long enough for your lesson without any glue, try it.  *Johanna Duffy and Keiko Fortin has lots of experience in it.

" Why do people go to church? "

(Encourage the children to give as many answers as they can.)

"What do people do in church?"

 (Let the children respond).

Introduce the idea that people go to church to worship God.

Place the letters W, O, R, S, H, I, P horizontally across the board.

Ask: "What do you think is worship?"  Then amplify or clarify the children's ideas.

"Worship" is related to another word we know, 'worth.'  When we say that something is worth a lot, we mean it has great value, or is very important.  What do you value the most? (Listen to their replies.)  God made you and me. He made the whole world, the sun and moon, the birds and flowers, the rain and food.  He loves you and me very much.  That should make Him the most important Person in our lives.

When we tell God how wonderful He is, we are worshiping Him.

There is many things about worship in the Bible.

* Move the letters on the flannelboard so that they are in a vertical column.  As each Bible verse is read and the question answered, place the descriptive card next to the letter.

Psalm 62:1

"What is the man in this verse doing as part of worship? "

Yes, He is waiting in silence.  God loves us so much that He wants to speak to us.  But He usually speaks in a 'still small voice' so we must be careful to listen. (Place the word Wait)

"How many people should we worship according to this verse? "

(Matthew 4:10)

Yes, only (Place the word Only) God. He is the only true and living God.

"What did the people do as part of their worship?"

(Nehemiah 8:1-3)

Yes they read God's Word. (Place card of the book)

Read Psalm 96:1

"This is another way to worship.  What is it?"

Yes, singing (Place the note card). Have you ever felt so thankful to God that you just had to sing a song to tell Him?

Read Psalm 66:2) the honor of His name.  When we 'honor' someone, we respect him.  We are to respect God because He is so great and wonderful. (Place word "Honor").

Part of the worship is listening to God. (Psalm 32:8). God instructs us, tells us what we should do. (Place word "Instructs")

(Psalm 5:2) "If we want to tell God how wonderful He is and praise Him, what is another way we can do it? "

Yes, we can pray and talk to God." (Place word Pray).

Discuss with your class the different ways to pray. Exchange ideas, testify about some of your best prayers. Give examples of some great religious people experiences in prayer.

* Note: Make one of your student (the one who cannot stay still) put the word for you on the flannelboard.
