Lesson on The First Family

The Story: 

Adam and Eve
Genesis 1 – 2

Do you remember what we learned about how everything began? Yes, our world was created by the all-powerful, all-wise and ever-present God. When did God create man? Yes, on the sixth day after the world was ready for him.  What did God tell man that showed he was more important than any of the rest of God’s creation? God gave man the plants of the earth for his food. And he was supposed to rule over the animals. Most importantly God were all alone by Himself, that's why he created man and woman. God made Adam and Eve as babies and wanted to love and live with them for ever, sharing joy and happiness in every moment.

Unlike the rest of the Creation, human beings were given the ability to act and think on our own, and therefore to respond to God from our own free will.  That's the way God wanted love to be. God told Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful and multiply; and fill the earth.” He wanted them to have children and help each other to have good families.

There were two special trees in the garden. One of these trees was the “Tree of life.” The other was the “Tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” When God put man in the garden, He told them about all the trees. God said to Adam, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.” 

The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil can let humans know what good things and bad things are. God didn't want people to have a bad mind, and that's why he told them not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

But one day, Eve, who was to be Adam's wife when she grew up, disobeyed God and broke her promise to Him. Then after that, she told Adam to eat the fruit, too. So Adam ate it. Then they felft ashamed. They had done something terrible and were cast out of the garden of Eden.

Since then people have good mind and bad mind and live in a state of miserable confusion away from God.

EXTRA ACTIVITY

God planned for man to work from the very beginning. What was Adam’s job in the garden? What kind of work can you do at home? What about when you grow up? Maybe your family can talk about work you might like to do. What kind of training would you need? Would you have to go away from your hometown? Be sure to plan to put God first.

 TALKING IT OVER

1. Do you have a pet? Animals can keep us company - - but why are people better?
2. Many people today do not take marriage very seriously. They say they will get a divorce if they are not happy. Why is this wrong? How does it cause unhappiness?

3. Sometimes people are nicer away from home than they are at home. Is it important to be nice to the people in our family? Why?
4. How does sharing work at home help everyone? Will you be a good mother or father if you don’t know how to work at home?

When children are born into the family, the father and mother care for them, too. They work hard so they will have food to eat, clothes to wear and a place to live. A father and mother who truly love his children will teach them about God. They will also take them to worship God at church. Children will learn many things, but nothing is as important as learning God’s will for them an develop their conscience in a positive way.

God also speaks to children about their part in the family. God says, “Honor your father and mother.” This means that children are to do what their parents say as their parents try to help them learn and follow God’s will.

They should never say ugly things to their parents. They won’t say bad things about them to others either. They will try not to do anything that would make their mother and father ashamed.

Children should be satisfied with whatever their parents get for them. Whining and complaining because other children have more keeps the home from being a happy place.  When there is unhappiness in the family, it is because somebody is not doing God’s will. Learning God’s plan for families is important for young people. It will help them have a happy home of their own when they grow up. God wants our homes to be one of our greatest blessings in this life.
